Do you have a child interested in finding out how things work from a mechanical perspective? Then Homer Price by Robert McCloskey is the perfect book to read. Robert McCloskey is a masterful story teller, and he will capture the attention of your children in short order. In the opening pages of the first chapter, we are introduced to Homer Price.
Homer is a young boy who lives on the outskirts of Centerburg. He lives with his parents and his secret pet skunk named Aroma. His passion for all things mechanical leads him to create a lift to allow Aroma to enter and exit his bedroom through the window. When evening rolls around, Homer is working on his various projects. He eventually succeeds in creating his own radio, which leads to his involvement in catching a band of robbers. Aroma just might play an instrumental role in the whole adventure!
Each chapter of Homer Price contains a stand alone story. My personal favorite is “The Doughnuts”. Homer’s Uncle Ulysses and Aunt Agnes own a lunch room in Centerburg. Uncle Ulysses has a weak spot for the purchase of labor saving devises. Accordingly, he cannot resist his another addition to the lunch room: an automatic doughnut maker.
One evening, he steps over to the barber shop to play cards leaving Homer is charge of putting the machine back together and making a batch of doughnuts to sell. Things go awry when the doughnut machine will not shut off. How do a missing diamond bracelet, a sandwich-board advertiser, and an after-the-double-feature crowd seamlessly work together to polish off hundreds of doughnuts before Aunt Aggy returns?
Homer Price by Robert McCloskey contains six stand-alone stories, each one filled with his subtle humor. Your listeners will chuckle along as they encounter contests featuring giant balls of string and inventions that capture mice without harming them. Don’t miss out on reading Robert McCloskey’s imaginative tales.
