You will meet a beloved and endearing pig named Emily in Yummers by James Marshall. Emily finds that she is gaining weight and decides that the solution to this problem is to get more exercise. Her friend Eugene, a turtle, is convinced that walking is the best exercise, and he invites Emily to go on a long stroll with him.
Unfortunately for Emily, she begins to get hungry on this long walk and finds herself eating frequently along the way. Her indulgences include sandwiches, corn on the cob, scones, Eskimo pies, and Girl Scout cookies. She can’t resist the opportunity to sample pizza at the supermarket. “It is so important to sample new products,” she declares. Compared with the choices of her friend Eugene, Emily’s eating habits are outrageous. Eventually, she finds herself with a tummy ache while trying to finish her cherry pop and a candied apple.
Concerned for his friend, Eugene helps Emily home to bed. The next day while visiting Emily, he wonders out loud what might have caused her to not feel well. Be sure to read this book to hear Emily’s reply. Yummers by James Marshall is a beautiful story of friendship and is full of laughs as we relate to Emily’s weakness for yummy food!
